But those breaks you take may actually be good for productivity. In fact, walking away from a large project for up to ten hours can allow new ideas to form in your subconscious mind. Some ways to work less: get up and move! Sitting for long periods of time is bad for your health and your productivity. Movement improves blood flow to the brain. Try this routine: sit for 20 minutes and work, stand for eight minutes and work, then stop working and walk for two minutes. Repeat throughout the day. Another idea: take a 20 minute afternoon power nap if you can and drink a cup of coffee right before. The caffeine will kick in just as you wake up. Lastly – when you do work, avoid multi-tasking. Instead, focus on one task at a time, and ignore distractions, such as checking your phone or social media. There are even anti-distraction programs like Selfcontrol, Freedom, and Stayfocusd to keep you on track.
If you want to maximize productivity, a good night’s sleep is also important. Research shows that sleep allows your brain to make new and unexpected connections – which explains why you often have some of your best ideas during your morning shower.
