NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. (Ivanhoe Newswire) — Tamara Mangum has been consistently named one of the top businesswomen in the state of New Jersey despite humble beginnings in a city once thought of as one of the most dangerous places in America. This woman who goes by the nickname Dr. T makes no secret of her success and wants to share her roadmap with others.
Tamara Mangum has come a long way from her early childhood in Newark, New Jersey.
Mangum told Ivanhoe, “It was very bad, drug dealing, car theft. My mom, she really took care to make sure we were protected.”
Mangum not only survived, but thrived. By the time she was in her thirties she was making a six-figure salary at a human resources staffing company. Then she quit it all to be her own boss. Her big break came after a chance encounter and quick pitch in an elevator.
“And he says what is it that you do? We provide full service staffing to companies. He says what are you the secretary? I gutted down and said no I’m the president, and if you are even in need of my services please feel free to give me a call. They became the first client of Sharpened Image, Inc,” Mangum explained.
Over 15 years, Dr. T built the business into a $12 million enterprise with more than 70 employees. Dr. T uses three guideposts when she coaches women passion, purpose and power.
Mangum said, “Which one is going to get you up in the morning? Which one is going to lay you down at night? That’s passion.”
She says purpose means having a specific goal and a plan.
To get there. Power comes from believing that you deserve success. Call it Dr. T’s superpower.
“The idea was why am I making millions for you when can make millions for myself. That’s what I did,” Mangum said.
Dr. T has three advanced degrees in business and management. She has been named to the top 100 women-owned businesses in New Jersey, and top emerging small businesses in the U.S. She is also the former chairwoman of the board of trustees of the Greater Newark Economic Development Corporation, where she is helping to revitalize the economy in her hometown.
