Avoiding Car Accidents

Orlando, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire)–Every year, 37,000 people in the U.S. die in car accidents. An additional two million are injured or disabled, according to the Association for Safe International Road Travel.

To avoid car accidents, it’s important to understand what causes them. Number one on the list is speeding, followed by drunk driving, but almost everyone is guilty of number three: cell phones.

Darren Dillon of the Orlando Police Department told Ivanhoe, “Same thing as with DUI, you have the same type of cues. Swerving within a lane, staying stopped when the light turns green, you stay stopped because you’re still looking down at your phone.”

Look out for red light runners, scan the road ahead of you, and don’t tailgate. The list continues with weather as number four: wet pavement causes most of these accidents. Take it slow, keep both hands on the steering wheel, and perform engine maintenance regularly. Unfortunately, you won’t always have control of the situation, but you can do your part and make the road safer.

A 2018 study from the University of Waterloo found that millions could be saved in medical, insurance, and vehicle damage by implementing simple strategies such as better signage, wildlife detection systems, fencing and wildlife crossings. Incidentally, the CDC estimates that there are over 200,000 crashes in the U.S. from animal crossings every year.
