Orlando, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) — A positive outlook can lower stress, boost immunity, and even improve heart health, according to the Mayo Clinic. But experts warn that relentless positivity, ignoring or dismissing negative feelings can backfire.
Positivity fuels motivation and helps us cope, but too much of a good thing can turn harmful. It’s called toxic positivity.
Phrases like “I’m sure it will all work out,” “Just work a little harder,” or “It could always be worse” may sound encouraging, but psychologists say they can shut down real emotions.
Psychology Today says toxic positivity is the act of avoiding, suppressing, or rejecting negative emotions or experiences.
A recent survey saw that over 75 percent admitted ignoring their own emotions to appear happy. so, how you can you avoid toxic positivity? change up what you say! instead of saying “Just stay positive!” try “I’m listening.” replace “all you have to do is shift your mindset.” with “how can I support you today?” or simply say “your feelings are valid and I’m here.”
The goal isn’t to give up positivity, it’s to balance it with genuine understanding.
If you’re constantly trying to stay positive and push away other emotions, you’re not doing yourself any favors. Studies show that suppressing feelings can raise stress hormones, weaken your immune system, and lead to problems like high blood pressure, headaches, and digestive issues. So, stay hopeful but also stay honest with yourself and the people around you.
