Orlando, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) — The buzz around mushroom-infused drinks is exploding. From coffee alternatives to cocktail substitutes, experts say they can offer focus and immunity support but only if you know what you’re sipping.
Marketed to boost focus, reduce stress, and even replace alcohol. But do they deliver?
“They are brain boosting for certain and also help with stress and immune support,” said Roniece Weaver, Registered Dietitian.
Studies show lion’s mane can support cognitive clarity, especially in older adults with mild memory issues. Clinical trials show improved memory and faster processing after just 28 days. Reishi and cordyceps may improve stamina and reduce anxiety, and chaga? It’s a powerhouse of antioxidants and can help to strengthen immunity. But there’s a downside. Mushroom beverages aren’t FDA regulated. Quality and dosing can vary widely. And watch for “proprietary blends.” These vague labels can hide low dosages or unknown additives. Some extracts may irritate sensitive stomachs. And if a product includes psilocybin, a psychedelic compound, the risks increase.
“That to me, that sounds dangerous,” said Weaver.
Look for products that list individual mushrooms with clear dosage amounts, avoid blends you can’t identify, and drink in moderation.
“We can crash and burn on anything if we overdo it,” explained Weaver.
And while “mushroom” may sound natural, remember, not all fungi are created equal.
Choosing smartly matters. The trend isn’t necessarily bad, but education is key. Choose products that are transparent about ingredients and dosage. And remember, even “healthy” nutrients can do more harm than good if overused.
