Orlando, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) — We’re used to wearing shoes every day, all day long, but have you ever considered ditching them? Walking barefoot might feel unusual at first, but research shows it comes with real benefits. From improving foot mechanics to enhancing balance and even reducing stress. In fact, going shoeless could be a step in the right direction.
It’s time to take off those sneakers, ditch those high heels, and let your feet finally touch the ground! Science says exposing your feet to soil is good!
“Simply exposure to soils may have dramatic health benefits,” said Christopher Lowry, Neuroendocrinologist, UC Boulder.
Each year, 28 to 35 percent of people over 65 fall. Walking barefoot can help prevent this by activating foot muscles and nerves that improve balance and posture.
“There’s no question now that, what is, has been called nature prescriptions or a nature therapy can have health benefits,” said Lowry.
Studies show that grounding can help reduce things like stress. It shifts the body away from a “fight or flight” response to stress to a “rest and reset.”
Even kids can benefit. A National Institutes of Health study found barefoot walking may enhance cognitive function in adolescents.
So, if you’re thinking about baring it all, take it slow, try short 15 to 20-minute sessions of walking barefoot and start on softer surfaces like sand or grass.
If you’re not quite ready to go completely barefoot, minimalist shoes could be a great alternative. They mimic the feeling of being barefoot while still protecting your feet. One study found that adults who switched from supportive footwear to minimalist shoes saw a 57 percent increase in foot strength after six months. So, whether it’s shoes off or just a lighter step, it could be worth trying!
