TAMPA, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) — Cerca de un 22 por ciento de estudiantes en Estados Unidos no hablan ingles en sus hogares. Comenzar el colegio sin dominar el idioma puede dificultar el aprendizaje.

Para algunos niños hispanoparlantes, el pre-escolar sera la primera vez en que se veran inmersos en otro idioma. Trina Spencer, PhD, estudia la instrucción del lenguage en poblaciones culturalmente diversas. Asegura que para ayudar a un estudiante de pre-escolar a aprender ingles como segundo idioma, la clave es fortalecer su idioma nativo a base de cuentos. Un estudio demostro que los estudiantes de pre-escolar que participaron en un programa de intervencion en ingles y español, tenian mejor vocabulario y capacidad narrativa en ambos idiomas que los niños que solo recibieron instrucción en ingles.

Spencer indica que incluso si los padres no dominan el ingles pueden apoyar el aprendizaje de sus hijos a base de cuentos en su propio idioma. Recomienda narrar historias basadas en vivencias personales y de su cultura, usando palabras complejas y frases largas. Y al terminar pedirle a los niños que las repitan en sus propias palabras. Para abrirles el mundo del lenguage y ayudarlos a triunfar.

Segun el departamento de educacion, solo se graduan de bachillerato un 63 por ciento de los estudiantes que aprendieron el ingles como segundo idioma. Esto contrasta con el nivel nacional de 82 por ciento entre los angloparlantes nativos. Y de ese 63 por ciento que llega a graduarse, solo un 1.4% de ellos toma los examenes de entrada a la universidad.
