ORLANDO, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) — Fall season has arrived and with it, cooler temps and more dangers for your body. According to the CDC, during a six-month period last fall and winter infections caused over 800,000 hospitalizations! Vaccines can provide protection, but which ones are the most important?
‘Tis the season to be sick! The flu, common cold, RSV and COVID-19 — diseases to watch out for as the colder months arrive.
“Adults should be always thinking about immunization in general,” said Arturo Wong, physician at Primary Care of Florida.
But which vaccines are worth it? Last year’s CDC estimates show that the flu season caused 40 million illnesses, 470,000 hospitalizations, and 28,000 deaths! So, flu vaccines are a must!
“It’s necessary, for preventing or reducing the symptoms,” Dr. Wong told Ivanhoe.
A study showed that the flu vaccine can lower the chance of visiting a doctor for the flu by 40-60%. How about a COVID-19 vaccine?
“Absolutely, they’re pretty safe. There’s always a case of allergies and that’s how always in the United States,” explained Dr. Wong.
The FDA also approved this year’s COVID booster.
Another — the RSV vaccine. A study in The Lancet saw the vaccines were about 80% effective in preventing ICU admission and death among adults aged 60 and older.
In the end, Dr. Wong strongly advises that vaccines that protect you against serious diseases are worth taking.
What about taking multiple vaccines at once? Is it safe? According to the CDC yes, but certain combinations of vaccines given together can cause fever, and occasionally febrile seizures; these are temporary and do not cause any lasting damage.
This year’s COVID vaccine may be harder to get based on where you live. Guidelines of who can get the vaccine, at what cost, if you need a prescription, and if you need your Medicare card vary state to state, so look up your state’s guidelines if you chose to get the COVID vaccine.
