ER? No Thank You! Staying Safe This New Year

CLEVELAND, Ohio. (Ivanhoe Newswire) — In 2025, over 155 million people went to emergency rooms in the United States. That’s 47 out of 100 people! Forty million of those visits were from injuries.

Completely avoidable accidents happen every day!

“Whether it’s having your seat reclined, whether it’s having your arm out the window, whether it’s having your feet on the dash, it leaves you more susceptible to injury. With impact, the airbag could deploy, if there’s an airbag on that side, which would forcefully push your legs up into your torso,” explained Jason Milk, DO, medical director of the Hillcrest Emergency Department at Cleveland Clinic.

And you may have heard banana clips are safer to wear in a car than claw clips since they won’t embed in your skull in an accident, but:

“Underneath the claw apparatus underneath is exactly the same. I don’t think skull fracture, I do think lacerations or cuts to the scalp or to the hair,” said Dr. Milk.

A phenomenon seen more and more now is people getting injured from walking while on their phone.

“There are case reports of people tripping into manholes, running into trees, walking out into traffic and being hit by a motor vehicle,” described Dr. Milk.

And as it starts to get warmer, “trampoline season” begins. Many kids and adults come to the ER with fractures on their toes, midfoot, and ankles.

“Occasionally we’ll see head and neck injuries as people are trying to do flips.”

Even if the risk is 1%, that means it will happen to somebody.

Other preventable injuries to avoid: mixing supplements and medications without consulting your doctor, leaving your kids unsupervised around bodies of water or fire, not focusing when on an electric scooter, and long-term exposure to extreme heat if you’re elderly.
