Chronic Sinusitis Sufferers: Breathing Breakthrough

ORLANDO, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) — For an estimated 30 million American adults, the simple act of breathing can be a daily struggle. That’s one in eight adults across the U.S. battling the persistent pain and discomfort of chronic sinusitis. And it’s not just older individuals who are impacted. Young, otherwise healthy people can also find themselves trapped in a cycle of inflammation and discomfort. And while treatments like sprays, irrigations and pills are often the first line of defense, a staggering 80% of people just can’t find relief. Now, there’s a potentially game-changing approach that is helping patients breathe easier again.

Jonathan Davis is ready to tee it up and get his golf game back on track.

“I like that golf is all about your attitude,” he told Ivanhoe.

For more than a decade, enjoying time on the course has been almost impossible.

“The worst was going from somebody who would be wanting to go out every day of the week to wanting to just stay at home and be in bed.”

Jonathan suffers from chronic sinusitis, a condition where inflammation of the sinus lining causes debilitating symptoms. He tried everything from antibiotics and a nebulizer to multiple surgeries and two balloon sinuplasties.

“I tried everything under the sun to try to rid this issue,” Jonathan said.

“A lot of these traditional nose sprays patients sniff in and it might hit the front of their nose, but they really don’t go in the sinuses,” explained Nick Debnath, MD, FACS, otolaryngologist at Florida Otolaryngology Group, P.A.

There is an FDA-approved device, called XHANCE that utilizes an innovative exhalation delivery system. So instead of simply sniffing, patients blow into a mouthpiece while spraying, sending steroid medication deep into the sinuses.

“The roof of the mouth will close and the medicine will stay in the sinuses and not go down the throat. And that’s why XHANCE works,” said Dr. Debnath.

Taken twice a day, this targeted treatment is giving Jonathan his best shot yet at returning to the game he loves.

XHANCE is the first and only approved treatment for people suffering from chronic sinusitis without nasal polyps. Doctors emphasize that this system is considered very safe for most patients. As with any medication, those with pre-existing conditions like glaucoma or cataracts should speak with their physician beforehand.
