Mind Your Business Manners
Julia Anita, founder and director of Protocol Essentials, has been conducting training courses in etiquette for more than 30 years in Europe and the United States. She says manners and etiquette, like language and fashion, are fundamental means of communication and self-expression. Good manners in business and social settings are a way of showing consideration and sensitivity towards others. Take Julia Anita's quiz to find out if you know a few etiquette basics:
QUESTIONS:
- Whose name is spoken first when you are introducing your CEO and a client?
- What are the three important parts of an introduction?
- If you have to wear a name badge, do you wear it near your right or left shoulder?
- Where do you place your napkin if you leave the dining table for a short time during the meal?
ANSWERS:
- The client is more important than your CEO. Say the client's name first and introduce the CEO to the client. When introducing the client to your CEO, give some information that would help with the conversation.
- Eye contact, a smile, a handshake
- Wear a name badge near your right shoulder. The eye easily travels to it as we shake hands with our right hands.
- Leave your napkin on your chair during meal. It should only be placed on the table at the end of the meal as people are getting up to leave.
TECHNOLOGY: Julia Anita says now is an optimal time to brush up on business etiquette because of changes brought by technology. For example, cell phones should not be on your desk, attached to your ear or on all the time while at work. Never write anything negative in an e-mail. Be careful who you send e-mail to and the content of the e-mail.
