Stress Eaters Compensate By Eating Less Later
(Ivanhoe Newswire) – People who eat more when they are stressed may eat less in times of less stress in order to compensate, according to new research from Germany.
The study examined the habits of two types of stress eaters: those known as “munchers,” who tend to eat more when faced with stress, and those known as “skippers,” who tend to eat less when faced with stress. Researchers found, after receiving negative feedback in the study, those who were “munchers” ate more, and the “skippers” ate less. But when faced with positive feedback, the “munchers” ate, on average, 74 less calories than the “skippers.”
"Stress eaters should not be considered at risk to gain weight by default," lead researchers Gudrun Sproesser was quoted as saying. "Our results suggest the need for a dynamic view of food intake across multiple situations, positive and negative."
