Diabetic Patients to Extend Lives from Bypass Surgery
(Ivanhoe Newswire) - A recent study from Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute, Kansas City finds that patients with diabetes or coronary artery disease in more than one artery are eligible for a treatment using drug-eluting stents.
In the past, coronary artery bypass graft surgery was preferred over stent placement. Now, the FREEDOM trail has shown that there are lower rates of heart attack but higher risks of stroke in using drug-eluting stents.
The results of the FREEDOM trial showed that patients with coronary artery disease and diabetes overall benefitted from the stent and had an improved quality of life.
