Statin Use Linked to Cataract Risk
(Ivanhoe Newswire) – The use of statins, popular cholesterol-lowering medications, has been linked with an increased risk of cataracts, according to research from the San Antonio Military Medical Center.
The study examined military hospital records from 2001 to 2010, and found the risk of cataracts was higher in patients who used statins than non-users. After accounting for other factors which may explain the increased risk, researchers found the odds ratio was 1.27. Overall, researchers examined the records of 6,972 patients.
