Rosie Espinoza’s “Rosie’s Garage” program operates out of La Habra, California, which reports more than 1,400 crimes annually. There are about 23 crimes committed per 1,000 residents.
Though the Latino student population is expected to represent one of four students by 2021, Latinos are the least educated of all ethnic groups, and college graduation rates remain relatively flat-lined. Decades of intervention attempts have proved unsuccessful.
Latino students begin to fall behind their peers in academic performance as early as kindergarten. To help close the gap, some researchers suggest aligning education efforts with preschool commencement.
The Daily Points of Light Award was established by George H.W. Bush’s administration to recognize individuals like Rosie making promising changes in communities throughout the United States.
