Helmets Reduce Winter Head Injuries
(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Helmets have been found to reduce the risk of head injury among skiers and snowboarders by 35 percent.
Head injuries account for up to 19 percent of injuries in skiing and snowboarding accidents, and neck injuries account for up to 4 percent. Traumatic brain injury is the leading cause of death among skiers and snowboarders, according to the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
In an analysis of 12 studies conducted in Europe, Asia and North America, researchers found the use of helmets during recreational activities to be beneficial.
Although some suggest that helmets can increase the risk of neck injury, no evidence was found to support these suggestions.
